Resolving the error “Borland database engine not installed. Can’t load Corel Address Book Service Provider” on Microsoft Outlook 2003/2007/2010

I recently experienced this error on a Windows XP system. After searching on the web I could not find a solution so here’s the fix I found that worked for me. The background is as follows.

The cause of this error is a unknown conflict between Corel WordPerfect and Microsoft Outlook. This error either appears during the load screen for Outlook, or after Outlook has loaded. For me, the error appeared on starting Outlook 2010 and prevented Outlook for loading. Some solutions on the web detailed disabling the Corel Outlook plug-in, or disabling it in the Services tab. However, I was unable to find it listed as a service. I was also unable to start Outlook in safe mode so I could not disable the Corel Address Book plug-in.

The solution is to go into Control Panel – Mail and select Profiles. There you will see the entry for Corel Address Book. Delete this and create a new address book called Outlook. Restart Outlook in safe mode. Outlook will prompt to re-enter your account details so do so. Once done go to the Trust Centre and check for any Corel Address Book entries listed in the Add-Ins and disable these. I was unable to find any reference to Corel in the Outlook Add-ins. Once the above is done you will then be able to restart Outlook in normal mode without the error.
